Partial Government Shutdown Enters 27th Day

The partial government shutdown, which is now the longest in American history, entered its 27th day today with no end in sight. While the President entertained the possibility of declaring a national emergency to divert funds from the Department of Defense to construct a border wall with Mexico last week, recent media reports indicate that he has decided against pursuing that route. Meanwhile, as negotiations remain deadlocked, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sent a letter to the President, asking him to move the annual State of the Union address, currently scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 29, citing security concerns from the shutdown, noting that the Secret Service is one of the agencies that has not received any funding.
