Congressional Leadership Elections

This week, House Democrats held leadership elections for Speaker, Majority Leader and Majority Whip for the 117th Congress. The leadership team will remain unchanged in the upcoming Congress, with Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn retaining the top spots. The election for chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will be held when Congress returns after Thanksgiving.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R, CA) has been reelected to his post by his colleagues to lead a larger GOP conference in the new session of Congress next year. Other top House leaders were also reelected to their current posts, including House Republican Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming as chair of the House Republican Conference.

In the Senate, the party leadership will remain the same as in the 116th Congress. The Senate GOP unanimously reelected Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as the caucus leader. Committee assignments and committee leadership will be finalized at a later date.
