FDA Signals Openness to Reduced Harm Tobacco Products and Other Flavored E-Cigarettes

On October 28th, FDA Center for Tobacco Products Acting Director Bret Koplow presented a keynote address during the annual Food and Drug Law Institute’s “Tobacco and Nicotine Policy Conference.”

In the keynote address, Acting Director Koplow signaled an important policy shift by acknowledging tobacco harm reduction products as a key part of the agency’s tobacco regulatory framework to continue to lower smoking rates.

In addition, Acting Director Koplow indicated an openness to expanding the range of flavored e-cigarettes eligible for approval if the products align with public health goals. Currently, the FDA has only authorized several menthol-flavored e-cigarettes for sale in the U.S.
