House Approves January 6 Commission Despite GOP Opposition

The House voted yesterday 252 to 175 to approve a bill (H.R. 3233) to establish a commission to investigate the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6. 35 Republicans joined Democrats voting in favor of the bill. The House will also vote on a $2 billion special funding bill to bolster Capitol security later this week. The plan to investigate the insurrection that interrupted the certification of electoral votes has caused friction within the Republican Party. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) opposed the plan to set up a commission, and urged colleagues to vote against it, even though it was negotiated by the top Republican and Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) also announced his opposition, saying another probe into the attack was unnecessary. McConnell's opposition is the latest signal that the bill may not get the 10 GOP votes needed to pass the Senate. Read more here.
