Truck Driver Shortage Gaining More National Attention

The national shortage of truck drivers continues to garner both national and local media attention. This shortage is driving up prices, causing bottlenecks in supply chains, and the crisis could be further exacerbated by price increases from ongoing trade wars. Without deliberate action, this shortage could triple in the next decade. CDA supports H.R. 5358, the DRIVE Safe Act, which currently has 66 cosponsors, and would allow 18-year-olds to obtain commercial drivers’ licenses, provided the individuals complete a rigorous, two-step training program. CDA is taking a larger role in the effort to push this bill, working with allied trade associations to identify a Senate sponsor and working to find a legislative vehicle for passage.
