FDA Commissioner Signals Coming Action on E-Cigarettes

Yesterday, at a House Appropriations Committee hearing on the FY19 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) budget, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb signaled that the agency may be planning action on e-cigarette companies in the coming weeks, but declined to give details. In response to a question from Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY-17) about e-cigarette companies introducing new products without FDA approval, Gottlieb told Rep. Lowey that, “you’re going to see us stepping into this fight in a vigorous way in the coming weeks.”

Last month during a CNBC interview, Gottlieb said the FDA would likely release two guidance documents regarding how to study e-cigarettes as a potential FDA-approved drug.
